MISSOURI MORMON FRONTIER FOUNDATION
David Lewis, autobiography, BYU
After exiting . . . [ the Blacksmith shop, David] found himself directly in the line of fire, so he immediately changed his mind, went down an embankment, crossed the stream, ascended a steep bank on the opposite side near Haun's house, then headed south, and went to his own home situated a quarter of a mile from the main community. During his retreat, due to his physical condition, he was unable to run, and although he was exposed to enemy fire for two hundred (200) yards, and five shots went through his clothes, he was uninjured.
