Johnson, Leany affidavit, 267, 487
A few rods [1 rod = 16 1/2 feet] south of the blacksmith shop, was an unfinished well, about eight or twelve feet deep; but no water in it.

It was situated on the left bank, or north side of Shoal Creek. As a remnant of the mill dam there are still (1888) five large pieces of timber left in the middle of the creek. On the south bank the mill-dam originally rested upon a solid ledge of rock. . . . The old well. . . is 94 yards northwest of the old mill-dam, and in the shade of 4 elms. There is a high bank of yellow clay on the south side of the creek, immediately below the millsite.
