The original purchaser of the site where the pioneer log structure now sits was none other than Charles C. Rich, leader of the "Rich Branch," a Mormon settlement located 4- 5 miles south of Far West. Rich Branch was located in the Log Creek vicinity. In this period, Charles C. Rich, was the Presiding authority of the branch and President of the High Priest's Quorum in Far West. Eventually Rich rose to the position of Apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
After the expulsion of the Mormons from Missouri in the winter of 1838-1839, James Wallace occupied the log house and surrounding property. It remained in the Wallace Family's possession until around 1900. Wallace State Park is named after this family.
