1998 Haun's Mill Commemoration

1998 Commemoration at Haun's Mill

A special commemoration was held in Caldwell County, Missouri
Friday, 30 October 1998, 2:00 p.m.

Due to wet conditions at Haun's Mill the program began at the Far West Community of Christ (formerly RLDS) Church, Far West, Missouri
A processional of cars moved to the Haun's Mill site for a 4:00 p.m. wreath laying ceremony, including over 30 descendants of Haun's Mill participants.

Through the cooperation of several institutional and historical organizations, Dr. Mark A. Scherer, Community of Christ Church Historian, welcomed a full house of over 130 inerested attendees to the commemorative ceremony beginning at the Community of Christ building at Far West Church, Far West, Missouri.

Representatives of religious and historical organizations, including the Community of Christ and LDS churches, Restoration Trail Foundation, Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center, John Whitmer Historical Association, Mormon Historic Sites Foundation, and Missouri Mormon Frontier Foundation, joined together in commemorating the event and remembering those who died. Descendant, Maurine Ward (publisher of Mormon Historical Studies Journal formerly Nauvoo Journal), Brigham Young University History Professor Alex Baugh, Brigham Young University, Community of Christ Peace and Justice Coordinator Andrew Bolton, Community of Christ Church Historian Mark Scherer, and RTF President W.B. "Pat" Spillman reflected on the meaning of the occasion.

Despite the wet conditions, more than 130 gathered at the Haun's Mill Historic Site, in northeast Caldwell County, Missouri, for the wreath laying ceremony.

Directions to Community of Christ Far West Church, from I-35, take State Rt. 116 exit east to junction of D highway (7.3 mi.), north (left) on D to Far West (9 mi.) .
Directions to Haun's Mill: from I-35, take State Rt. 116 to Polo. North on Highway 13 through Kingston. New signs leading to Haun's Mill have been erected from Kingston.

The Sitzer commemorative marker (now in a deteriorated condition) was unveiled at Haun's Mill in 1941, which reads:
"Southwest of here on October 30, 1838, occurred the incident generally known as the Haun's Mill Massacre. This site located by Wm. R. Pemberton. This marker placed here by Glenn M. Setzer, 1941."
